ibu Playgroups

The ibu weekly organized playgroups were born on 1st June 2000 at 9:30am weighing in at a healthy 50+ members. They began life as the Association of British Women in Malaysia (ABWM) Toddler Group at the Commonwealth Club in Damansara but now happily reside at the ibu Drop In Centre, 33 Jalan Jelutong, Damansara Heights, 50490, Kuala Lumpur.

We currently run the following sessions:

Crawlers Group (Babies aged 4 months – 18 months):
Mondays (9:30 – 11:30 am) @ the downstairs play area.
Please note – no older siblings at the crawlers group for the babies safety.

General Playgroup Sessions (0 – 5 years):
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays (9:30am – 11:30am). Please do not bring older children.

Maids Welcome Playgroup (0-5 years):
Mondays, 2-4pm

Afternoon Storytelling Playgroup with Ann Ooi (0-5 years):
Wednesdays, 3-5pm

Playgroup fees can be paid in a number of ways. With effect from 1 July 2008, the rates are:

Quarterly Term Fees:
The term fee for a playgroup is RM150 for one child for the entire quarter (1 Jan to 31 Mar, 1 Apr to 30 Jun etc.). This fee is discounted for families with more than one child over the age of 6 months attending a playgroup - RM225 for 2 children and RM262.50 for 3 children. A similar discount applies if your child attends more than one playgroup per week – RM225 for two playgroup sessions per week for the term.

Multiple Session Card:
If you are unable to commit to attending the same playgroup every week, you can purchase a multiple session card for RM175 from the ibu Drop-In Centre office, which can be redeemed for 10 playgroup sessions (and can also be used for afternoon activities such as yoga). If you have more than one child attending a session, then an appropriate “value” will be deducted from your card.

Cash Drop-In Rates:
Casual attendees who have not purchased a Multiple Session Card are required to pay the slightly higher cash drop-in rate of RM20 per session. Discounts apply for multiple attendees from the same family.

As a general rule, maids are not to attend these playgroups, except of course the Monday afternoon “Maids Welcome” playgroup.

We rely on volunteers to run the groups and as such they are subject to change so please contact the Playgroup Co-ordinator to find out who is the playgroup representative for the group that you are interested in joining, or just introduce yourself on the day! Our playgroups cannot operate without a playgroup rep. If you would like to help start a group and be a representative or take over the responsibilities of being the representative for an existing playgroup, please do not hesitate to contact the Playgroup Co-ordinator.

At present we are not able to formally provide playgroup sessions on the Ampang area. However, we are looking for a suitable venue. The more support we have the easier it will be to find a location. If you are interested in a playgroup in Ampang, please contact the ibu office to register your interest.

Our playgroups have progressed from their humble beginnings to become the most popular and successful playgroups in KL. The popularity of the playgroup is due to so many factors: the location is ideal for those living in the Bangsar, Bukit Damansara/ Damansara Heights, Mont Kiara and Hartamas communities; there are a great selection of toys, dressing up clothes and ride-ons; our baby area set aside for those not yet on the move; both indoor and outdoor activities including water play and a sandpit; plenty of shade; and a great deal of enthusiasm!

The successful format of the sessions remains unchanged. Free playtime for the children starts the morning while the parents arrange the kiddie-sized tables and chairs, the sandpit and other toys and puzzles. In some playgroups, the kids then get busy with an activity, organised for that morning by one of the parents (it could be painting, sticking, threading, water-play etc.) After that comes snack-time (which the parents take turns to provide), when the mums and dads also get to relish a hard-earned cuppa and a biscuit. Unsurprisingly we can often get, oh, a good five minutes' quiet time while the little ones are munching! Finally, more playtime, story-time and a session of hearty singing - with actions!

The playgroups are open to all members of ibu. Even if you are not yet a member of ibu, you can still turn up for a free introductory session. Application forms for both ibu and the playgroups are readily available from the playgroup representative or the ibu Drop-In Centre office. With a quarterly fee of just RM150 for one morning per week, the sessions provide excellent play-value. If you are interested in coming along to join a playgroup please contact the Playgroup Coordinator or simply turn up and see for yourself!
